Maitake, meaning ‘dancing mushroom’ in Japanese, is also known as ‘hen of the woods’ in English. The first record of its medicinal use is during the Han Dynasty of China (202 BC - 220 AD.) In feudal times, it was highly valuable and worth its weight in silver (hence, you danced when you got it!). It contains complex polysaccharides studied for helping to fight viruses & infections.
